I first came up with the idea when I wanted a piece to hang in my own studio back in 2016. It wasn’t long that word of mouth got out and other people wanted one. I don’t blame them as I love making these and seeing customers that connect to each work.
I cut each fish from old weathered fence palings and layer between 160-200 of these to form a 3 dimensional bait ball. The result is that every fish is different and so too is every finished piece. The oval shape ball are about 1200mm x 800mm, and the very big spiral shoals are 1200mm round with 5 extra fish scattered around off the piece.
I build these to last with each fish glued and nailed to each other onto outdoor ply. These can go either indoor or outside (under cover) and will look better with age. They are easy and fast to hang and only need a heavy duty screw or nail that can support about 15kg.
I have customised some of these for customers with embossed scale patterns into each fish, concrete imbedded into cut grooves or inserted copper washers in the eyes – each to the customers colour decor.
