METAL FISHBALL

ABOUT THIS PIECE

This piece I did over 4 weeks in a Christmas break with over 750 laser cut stainless steel fish.

I had the idea which seemed Ok “in my head” but as it unfolded I had to make changes and invent ways to change it until I was happy and satisficed with it.

For example –
1). Stainless steel marks very easily – what to do?
2). These are too flat – how to curve them – each an every one
3). how to get the curve on which to mount these onto – (I had to build a fiberglass mold using wetsuit material, plywood and local beach sand to form the curve
4) Looks too clean/shinny – what todo??

I ended up wanting it to look like it had been brought up from the ocean after hundreds of years – showing rust and copper patinas.

I admit that I like taking on long jobs that take patience – but this is the first piece that I worked on that I said in my head “What have I done?? – I will never do this again”
